Turnament Devlog Nr. 30 - Mouth Noises

I spent an entire day recording commentary. When I asked about other in-game commentaries, I got recommended Valve games, Cry of Fear, Amnesia, and others, so I roughly knew what to go for. All 30 entries were already done on "paper", so I only had to speak them into a microphone. It actually was a lot of fun, I didn't have to record something for quite a while, so this was a nice change of pace.

Then I got my first feedback from Djigallag regarding Russian translation. We hopped on a Discord voice call and discussed a few things, such as story and certain terms. Commander Neek is translated to Nick in Russian because it sounds better and there really isn't a long "ee". The reference is gone, but if it feels better, I think it's the best choice.

Neek also says some foolish and random things, and I admire Djigallag for coming up with translations that still work, just in a bit of a different way.

Russian is also usually taking up more space than English, and I knew that from Catty & Batty, but there's still going to be some work to be done this time.

Perfect Sound

I spent another entire day recording mouth noises for "Perfect Sound" and I haven't had this much fun in quite a while. :D After making sure they're all normalized, I added them to the game and... it was glorious. One might even say, perfect. Auri liked it too, and she was the one who originally suggested this unlockable.

The commentary was also done after this day, and now with perfect sound and my commentary, there was definitely enough of my voice in this game.

Steam Feedback

I wanted to make sure to send the game for review, because I knew it could take a week. After a day or two, I got my feedback from Valve:

Curiously, I thought the "Steam Overlay" one was fixed before sending for review, but I guess it wasn't working on their end. I needed to investigate that.

The link to itch.io is funny - I'm not even sure why I added this link. I removed it, and also the link to Steam. I made sure to use the "Generic Gamepad" default controller setting in the Steam Input backend, and also checked for disconnected controllers (this is actually a cool idea).

I've sent it to Valve again - and this time it got approved!

And speaking of Steam, I also spent some time recording gameplay footage for the upcoming trailer and shot a few screens and uploaded the results on the Steam page.

Sound Issues

There were some issues when a sound got played a bunch of times at the same time, like explosions. I've dived into it to make sure to mute all similar sounds when one sound gets played, and I think it's better now. I might have to take another look at it again and only play sounds when it hasn't been played yet, sort of a preemptive  way to fix it (instead of playing all and then muting similar ones).

Gamedev Meetup

I went to a gamedev meetup here in Vienna, which was quite interesting. I met a bunch of people, working for Epic Games, Ubisoft, and games like Alan Wake 2. I met indie gamedevs who work on passion/art projects, and some who are trying to make a business. But most importantly, all were really nice people. I think I may go again next month (this happens on a regular basis), and maybe show off Turnament next time.

I did show it to someone, and it was the same question as usual: How do you play it? It is simply not clear from looking at screenshots. But with video it is a bit clearer. Maybe the new trailer will be able to help with that. I knew this when starting the remaster, and I'm learning a lot. Suffice to say, my next game will likely not have this problem.

Anyway! Next on my list was finishing Challenge Mode. But this is something for the next devlog entry.

To be continued... 💎
